BBC’s Investigative Report on the Possible Use of Toxic Chemicals During Protest Dispersal in Georgia and the Subsequent Developments

On 1 December 2025, the BBC published an investigative report stating that during the dispersal of large-scale demonstrations that began on 28 November 2024 in Georgia, law enforcement may have used a toxic compound Camite (bromobenzyl cyanide), against protesters.

Camite is a chemical agent banned since the 1930s due to its severe and long-lasting harmful effects on human health.

The investigation’s findings were based on multiple sources, including: A chemical inventory list obtained from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, which contained substances classified under international codes UN3439 and UN1710;

Clinical examinations documenting long-term symptoms experienced by the affected protesters; Scientific assessments by international experts; Testimonies from former employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and other witnesses.
